Why was the bank of England incorporated?

The Bank of England was incorporated by act of Parliament in 1694 with the immediate purpose of raising funds to allow the English government to wage war against France in the Low Countries ( see Grand Alliance, War of the ). A royal charter allowed the bank to operate as a joint-stock bank with limited liability.

'Bank of England New Change' was designed by Victor Heal and opened in 1957 (at the time it was London's biggest post-war rebuilding project); the new building contained several staff amenities alongside the office accommodation and, at street level, retail units were let to an assortment of businesses.

When did the bank of London start?

For most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the bank had a number of branches in London and other English cities. The first branches opened in 1826 (with impetus provided by the passing of the Country Bankers Act, which for the first time permitted the establishment of joint-stock banks outside London).
